Project Scope

The scope of work includes the design of:

  • New 220kV double busbar line circuit at the Yurralyi Maya Power Station (YMPS) Substation.
  • 15 km of dual circuit 220 kV transmission line between Karratha and Dampier.
  • A 2x90MVA 220 kV/33/11kV Mesh substation at Rio Tinto’s Kangaroo Hill Bulk Supply Substation (KHBSS) site in Dampier.
  • Protection and Auxiliary Supply Upgrades at the 220/33kV Dampier Bulk Supply Substation (DBSS).
  • New 33 kV power line from KHBSS to DBSS.
  • New 33kV power line from KHBSS to Horizon Power Dampier Substation.

Challenges Overcome

  • 220kV powerline running along the Karratha causeway with limited space and Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) height restriction due to the nearby Karratha airport.
  • Staging of the works for the 220kV line cutover at YMPS including the existing Power Line Carrier scheme.
  • Integration of the new line circuit at the YMPS substation including the existing Bus Zone protection and SCADA system.
  • Replacing the existing protection panel and installing a new panel within the existing control room at YMPS with limited site access.
  • Geotechnical and drainage issues at the KHBSS substation site.
  • Relocating the existing pilot protection and metering for Horizon Power from the DBSS to new KHBSS substation.
  • Achieving acceptable voltage limits on the rail and AGIG gas pipeline for the 220kV and 33kV powerlines.
  • Integration into the existing DBSS with 33kV reticulation and secondary systems.

  • Alternate foundation designs for off site construction or efficient on-site construction.
  • Innovative design for 33kV terminations and cable management on the 2x 220/33/11kV 90MVA power transformers.
  • Numerous stakeholder management meeting, design review and safety workshops.
  • Innovative panel design to account for significant number of main and backup relays within a single panel.
  • Integration into the existing ABB MicroStation.
  • Protection and Control panel design, supply and delivery.
  • Configuration, bench testing and integration design using SEL and ABB protection relays.
